Do GOOD for Playgrounds with KaBOOM!

The Idea

:

Only one in five kids in America has a safe place to play within walking distance of his or her home. We need 200,000 friends of GOOD to take pictures of playgrounds in their neighborhoods to help national non-profit KaBOOM! figure out where playgrounds are -- and where they should be.

The Specifics

Play is crucial to the health and well-being of children, but it’s disappearing from kids' lives. Currently, only one in five kids has a safe place to play within walking distance of his or her home. To bring play back into the lives of children, we need more safe places for them to play. That’s where KaBOOM! and GOOD’s 200,000 friends come in.

To figure out where playgrounds are needed, we have to know about the playgrounds that are already out there. KaBOOM! is relying on citizens and communities to help: we need 200,000 friends of GOOD to take pictures of playgrounds in their neighborhoods and add them to the Map of Play. Once we know where the playgrounds are, we can take action to address where they aren't.

KaBOOM didn't win most votes. KaBOOM! definely wins for most posts & passion! I love Mapping play! I love the video about taking pictures of playgrounds! I will be taking as many pictures of playgrounds as I can in Colorado Springs this summer during the park-a-day challenge.

I had the privilege of running out of my house and down ½ a block to my neighborhood playground when I was little. I can’t imagine what I would have done with so many hours of summer without that gathering place for friends and family. We had Halloween costume contests, birthday parties, picnics, and play all year round. Even in the snow the playground was the best place to be! I want every ADULT in America to have the same warm-belly, happy-heart MEMORIES that I have from my childhood!

Anyone who has organized a game of Hot Potato involving hundreds of children has earned the right to make as many puns as she wants, Eileen. :) Thanks for voting and for the awesome work in Laurel. If anyone who reads this is interested in how to connect community to collaborate, Eileen has got excellent ideas.

Thanks so much, Diane. I can't tell you how happy I am that we have your support -- not just in a contest like this but on the ground in Colorado Springs. Talk about changemakers -- from mapping the playspaces in Colorado Springs to holding a play day to advocating for parks and playspaces with city government, you're doing so much to make play a priority and build community. I wish you could meet some of the other folks who posted comments here. Y'all remind me of each other in your activism and dedication to your communities!

I've done my small part to add to the map for Louisville, but since it is Spring Break I can combine two great loves: going to the park and photography! Plus my kids will be certain to enjoy the "let's play today" aspect of this volunteer job! KaBOOM! is such an amazing resource!

I like the way you think, Myrdin. Taking photos of parks and playspaces is an excellent Spring Break challenge -- I hope more people who read this take it up. Thanks so much for voting and especially for all the great work you've done in Louisville to build out the Map of Play!

absolutely, plus my kids love that I ask their opinion of the playground-after all, they are the ones on the swings and slides!

I'm so glad, Brandy -- I hope lots of people like it because we need lots of help at KaBOOM! if we're going to figure out where all the playspaces in the US are.

If you want to get involved, you can either download the mobile app Playgrounds! via http://kaboom.org/mobile or just start taking pictures of playspaces and adding them directly to the Map of Play at http://kaboom.org/playspacefinder.
